Daily Cartoon: He-Man & The Masters of The Universe S01E05: Sky War

Welcome back to another exciting episode re-watch on Car JoeMez! We’re now five episodes into this series and I’m still excited to watch and churn these recaps out. A lot of times, I’ll start an older series (remember M.A.S.K.?) and become so bored with how the show progresses that I “take a break” and never come back to it. Sometimes I try, but it only lasts for an episode or so before I’m reminded of why I quit the show in the first place.

Look, we’re only on Episode 5 here with He-Man and The Masters of the Universe so there’s a very good chance that could still happen, but I think I kind of put some failsafes in place before starting this:

  • I love He-Man and am completely biased towards that universe
  • There’s only 39 episodes total so that’s not a heavy commitment
  • I have fond memories of this show, but don’t remember a lot of specifics so the re-experience should lead to some good content

Today’s episode is called “Sky War” and I’m assuming that means that Stratos plays a big part in this which is calming since he had his ass handed to him by the bad guys in yesterday’s episode and then wasn’t heard from again. Then again, maybe this has nothing to do with Stratos and we’ll have to continue to worry about his well-being. As they say on the streets, “This is why we play the games.” So let’s get comfy and watch a cartoon. Continue reading

Daily Cartoon: He-Man & The Masters of the Universe S01E04: The Courage of Adam

Welcome back to another episode rewatch on Car JoeMez! I’m very excited for today’s episode as we’ve gotten past the introductory episodes of this series and now can begin seeing the new direction the writers and creators want to take this.

Over the years, I’ve watched this full series, but admittedly, a lot of this going forward is going to be major refreshment almost to the point of seeing it for the first time. I will say that I have very positive memories from watching this show in the past, but as I’ve done some research over the past couple of days, not everybody seems to agree.

I remember this being well-written with a pretty good episodic storytelling format as opposed to just the “bad guy plot of the day” (which still exists, but plays an underlying role in advancing motivations) driven by characters who evolved in good form from the Filmation series.

I’m not going to say people hate it as its rating on IMDB is solid, but in some fan videos and such, people seem to remember this a lot less fondly than I do. We’re in luck, however, as today will put us around 10% completion in this series and we’ll be fast on our way to making these tough decisions for ourselves. Grab your plastic Power Sword and get comfy. We’re off to Eternia. Continue reading

Daily Cartoon: He-Man & The Masters of the Universe S01E02: The Beginning Part 2

Welcome back to another rewatch edition of the Daily Cartoon. Yesterday, we introduced ourselves to the 2002 Mike Young Productions version of He-Man and The Masters of the Universe and today we pick up with Episode 2.

Like I said yesterday, the first three episodes were all dropped together as basically a TV movie to introduce the new series and I ate that shit up with a spoon. VHS was still in vogue at this point and I was recording every episode on to one of those blank cassettes that I bought in bulk from the dollar store.

While still a very macro introduction, we do have the basis for what this series will be: Prince Adam is a 16 year-old slacker who has only known peace in his lifetime and thus has a hard time taking his responsibilities as prince seriously because – let’s be honest – it’s not like Skeletor is going to fucking attack Eternia anytime soon, right?

Stupid, stupid boy.

Well, Skeletor is fuckin’ coming and Adam doesn’t want to believe it so he doesn’t buy into the Sorceress’s prophecy that he is to become the guardian of Eternia. When we left off, Adam has blown off both her and Man-At-Arms only to find that the kingdom is under attack. And now we begin…. Continue reading

Daily Cartoon: He-Man & The Masters of the Universe S01E01: The Beginning Part 1

Whether you listen to the podcast, read my blogs or do similar stuff elsewhere, you understand that there’s simply some things you never outgrow. For a long time for me, that was pro wrestling, but as I finally waned off that in the past few years, one of the biggest influences of my childhood has remained as prominent a figure as ever: He-Man.

Sure, the original in the early-mid 1980s was a behemoth, but what I want to talk about today (and for the next few weeks) is the 2002 reboot of the Masters of the Universe made by Mike Young Productions for Cartoon Network.

It didn’t last long – only 39 episodes – which is a shame because I genuinely loved this series. And that love was not strictly based on nostalgia; it is genuinely good. It also had a wonderful toyline that became such a pain in the ass to collect as it felt like all you could ever find were repaints of He-Man and Skeletor and never the secondary characters needed to fill out your battle lines.
